Serkan Balyimez, along with his son and daughter, sat inside Jones AT&T Stadium to cheer on a riveting game of football. It was a different kind of football than what Jones Stadium is used to, though. Balyimez and his family were just a part of a small crowd that gathered inside the stadium Sunday to watch the final match of the 2014 World Cup on the stadium’s big screen. The match between Argentina and Germany attracted Texas Tech’s international students like Balyimez, where the setting of the stadium, as well as the free food and drinks provided, created a spirited atmosphere. “It’s good being outside,” Balyimez said. “I could watch it indoors, but I like this better for kids; they can play and run.” The event was organized by Tech’s Office of International Affairs and the graduate school as a way for international students, and anyone with a passion for soccer, to watch the final game together in a significant way. Balyimez, a recent graduate with a PhD in physics, is from Turkey. He said he was rooting for Argentina because he believes they were the underdog.
